    Tomato Salmonella Scare

Earlier this month, we were urged to avoid tomatoes because, since mid-April, almost 200 people have died from an unusual, virulent form of salmonella in almost 20 states while others have been hospitalized.  The FDA has been investigating and put raw red plum tomatoes, raw red Roma tomatoes, and raw round red tomatoes on the no-no list.  I'm avoiding tomatoes, which I love, completely until they figure it out.  This is scary and it's even scarier that this has been happening since mid-April.

    Re: Tomato Salmonella Scare

Sorry it took me a while to get back to you.  I've been away from the boards.  Well, I didn't solve this myself.  What happened was that folks started getting salmonella poisoning in the spring but no one knew from where.  They suspected it was from raw tomatoes or cilantro.  So for a long time I avoided those foods then the USFDA suggested it was peppers from Mexico.  In the end, I avoided buying foods that came from those possibly contaminated sources.  They still don't know, but I think the scare is pretty much over.
